This article is so hilarious to me because I have a very similar problem. Last.fm has caused me to be obsessed with only listening to music on my iPod or my computer (no CDs), and I'm AR about all the tracks on an album having the same play count.

:D nice post. I relate to a lot of what you wrote.

When I heard of AEP, I also selected what I listened to in order to get it to go higher. The expression you use is very good: "taste distortion". It seems that last.fm is very apealing to a particular type of personality (which is mine and many other people's personality), one that becomes, very easily obsessed with stats.

Anyway, last.fm is probably the most important thing that happened to me, in the last 3 years, in the way I listen to music. More than half (a lot more than half, I suspect) of the music I listen to now was discovered thanks to last.fm and last.fm users. I am deeply grateful for that.

Best wishes, and have fun listening to music,
nuno.

(oh, and Opeth are a great band!)

The part about hesitating to listen to your favourite artists' new album in fear of liking it is so true. Actually it's a pretty sick behaviour all of us AEP addicts are engaging in.

I have myself been a slave under AEP for the last six months, and it did effectively stop me from potentially enjoying Jay-Z' The Blueprint 3. Even though I have an AEP 4.3, Jay-Z is too far ahead in my charts to ever really be an option to listen to the way it is now.

You have opened my eyes, this has to stop. Today I'm removing my the AEP counter from my page. This can't go on. Scrobbling should be about the fun!
