also worth noting that it is always advisable to vary all anchor text, as too much of the same can easily trigger a Google penalty, so keep it fresh, and varied folks.

As far as social networks go, most of them are rel no follow, but there seems to be a shift in the Google algorithm as its using citations as well as direct links now - so only time will tell how that pans out. The art of killing Wiki ;)

Good articles Alex, interesting seeing somone putting this slant on something i use on a daily basis for blue chips - so well done mate :)

OK, I'm slightly wrong about URL shortners. Assuming they use 301 redirects then they will carry pagerank:

http://buildanichestoreblog.blogspot.com/2009/06/do-link-shorteners-pass-page-rank-and.html

However, I have see ones that send you across in some sort of iFrame (they put a toolbar at the top), these WILL kill the pagerank, and screw with any analytics you have too.

My point about anchor text still stands.

All good advice dude. UrL shortners WILL deplete any pagerank the would otherwise be passwd on from the page. If it's from twitter, then this is no issue, but NEVER use them to create links on non-social sites. Wherever you have control over the anchor text you should try and use keywords and not the URL - just the name of the band is good enough.

I'm going to cover alt text and the various HTML elements in a later article. Blimey, there's a lot to say on this stuff!

Once again an excellent and very useful SEO article 'Nose.

It's really difficult with the social networks trying their best to retain traffic to get external links going (I'm always conscious that Myspace is particularly bad for this) and I'm not entirely sure what SEO connotations the URL shorteners have but I certainly try where possible if we can edit html to drop in alt text behind graphics and links and ensure they are as clear as possible.

A little goes a long way as you say.
