The Inevitable Nose Metal Mixtape Volume 1
The Inevitable Nose Metal Mixtape is a regular compilation of the best unsigned music from the UK and beyond. Bands wishing to be considered for inclusion can send me their tracks here.
Ready for consumption
Cymbiotic – Blast Radius
Cymbiotic make brutal and complex technical metal that sounds like Meshuggah assaulting Gojira with a pneumatic drill. There is an intensity and maturity in this ear-punishing maelstrom seldom heard in an unsigned band. This is the sound of a band at the very top of their game and with new material like this, the bar is shifted up a few notches.

Photonic – Respirate
New Zealand’s one man show Photonic are one of my favourite unsigned bands out there at the moment. A perverse mix of grungy rock, angular hardcore and soothing post-rock, Photonic don’t stand still for long enough to be categorised. This track, taken from self-released debut Recorded Contact, perfectly encapsulates the eclectic spirit of this kiwi eccentric.

The KADT – See You in Hell
The KADT (Killer Airborne Disease Transmitters since you’re asking) kill the old way. Taking a cross section of thrashy old-school punk that begins with Discharge, through DRI to Gallows, they manage make this hackneyed genre sound fresh and vital. This is no Green Day. There is evidence that the obnoxious 10 round machine gun blast that is their debut is more infectious than H1N1 if it mutated into Anthrax.

TrippyWicked – Movin-on
It’s never been a better time to be a doom band, and TrippyWicked aren’t about to let the moment pass by waiting for the record industry catch up with this fact. With their self released debut imminent, their none-more-Sabbath sound and heavy grooves put them in prime position to capture the zeitgeist. However, TrippyWicked are more than just a Sabbath tribute act, there’s some solid songwriting ability here and first class riffery.

In need of further basting
Dycian Maze – The Hand Inside
Like a breath of fresh air from the already stale thrash revival, Dycian Maze represent a welcome shift to a more cerebral take on classic thrash. Oozing with talent and energy, Dycian Maze haven’t completely found themselves yet, but this track from their excellent EP Soldiers of the Grave proves there’s a wealth of potential.

Aceldama – The Last Time
Along with Triaxis, Aceldama spearhead a movement of British female fronted metal bands doing classic metal how it should be done, and without all that fluffy goth posturing. Like Alanis Morisette joining mid-period Maiden, Aceldama are at their best when they’re rocking out. There’s a little production polish needed here to give it the kick it really deserves, but don’t let that stop you from listening enjoying this classic metal.

Thracia – S.C.U.M.T.I.T.S
Thracia’s old school OI! and metalcore mashup is a breath of fresh air among the turgid glut of *cores that clog the airwaves. This lot will have you bouncing around before ploughing headlong into a moshpit. Both aggressive and uplifting, these guys have the potential for real mainstream appeal.

Crypsis – Demented Greed
What Crypsis lack in production values they make up for in gritty verve and vital energy. Tearing from the corpse of European classic thrash, Crypsis sound like early Kreator however there is a complexity here that elevates it above simple revisionism.

Still clucking
Cult of Whores and Dogs – Sex and Indestroy
Like a sleazy mix of Ministry and early Napalm Death by way of The Fall, it’s hard to see through the shoddy production values to know if they’re serious or not. It’s is so gritty you feel like you need a shower after listening to it. This is either going to be a laughing stock or a cult classic. I’ll let you decide.

PineappleJuicy – Tenderize
Nu-Metal wasn’t all bad, indeed some of it was (and still is) excellent. However, trying to resurrect this most un-cool of subgenres to a doom, black and death obsessed metal fraternity is a truly ballsy move. PineappleJuicy need to tidy up their style and production values before they’ll be ready general consumption, but the question is, is the world ready for a band like PineappleJuicy?
